This past weekend saw the SHOCK 14's get some much needed rest after a long competition schedule from February through to mid March. That doesn't mean that the girls were sitting around with their feet up at all, as two of SHOCK's finest were either hitting the basketball court or the soccer field this weekend. Claire Signatovich led her St. Ignatius basketball team to their first league championship in 25 years with a stellar effort, netting 35 of the teams 53 points in the semi final, and leading her team on the floor in the final against S.t Maurice to capture the Manitoba Catholic Schools Athletic Association title. The very next day, as a member of the Winnipeg Fury, Claire once again lead her team up and down the floor to capture the Winnipeg Philippine Basketball Association's championship in a great final match vs the 2001 Magic. Claire was named MVP for her efforts and will look to get back in the gym this week, on a different court in preparation for the 2015 Volleyjam Tournament held at the U of M on Friday March 27-28.
In a different arena, Mia Hildebrandt has been backstopping her team further and further into the playoffs every time she gets to step on to the field. Balancing soccer with volleyball basically keeps Mia in a gym somewhere every single night of the week, though you wont hear her complaining about it. Last weekend at Red River College for the Vision Open, Mia had to scoot out after our pre-quarter final match to drive across the city and tend goal for the Bonivital Soccer Club, ensuring that her club set up a date with their rival Phoenix Club the following week, stopping every shot she faced in the extra frame. After a competitive 3-3 draw after regular time, Mia did her best to keep her team on the right side of the result, with her team eventually losing the match 5-4 in penalty kicks.
Congratulations to both Claire and Mia on their efforts this season off of the volleyball court. Now back to the gym and get ready for the next few weeks which will see the SHOCK 14's prepare for their host tournament on April 17/18 in Oakbank, provincials in Winnipeg on April 25/26, and the National Championships in from 14-16 May in Calgary, AB.
