The SHOCK 15u team travelled to Brandon last weekend to compete in the 16u Westman tournament, held at Brandon University over Friday and Saturday. Pool play felt very familiar as the girls were in tough against 3 teams who the had previously faced just 2 weeks before in the Fury Open. The girls started off a bit slow, falling behind the Cats in both sets, but found ways to earn points and climb back to take the match 2-0. Fury Blue was up next, and after another sluggish beginning, SHOCK prevailed with another 2-0 win. Saturday saw the Mavericks on the other side of the net, with the same result of a 2-0 win, and 1st place in their pool. Winton 16's were up next in the quarter final match up, as SHOCK cruised to another 2-0 win, and the chance to face a tough opponent in the Royals in the semi final. An excellent match found SHOCK on top again, and moving back to the finals vs Fury Blue again, for the 2nd time over the weekend. There was no shortage of excitement, as both groups wanted a taste of their first tournament championship this season, and with both teams battling hard, the first set came to a close with SHOCK on top 25-20. The 2nd set featured excellent serving, and timely shots from everyone on the floor, and SHOCK ran out to a quick 6-0 lead before Fury came storming back, and brought the match closer with some good serving of their own, and sharp attacks that hit the floor. In the end, SHOCK pushed forward, and the girls were able to dominate in a 25-14 finish, capped off by a service ace from Leia Jaworski. Mia Hildebrandt had a breakout weekend, contributing with 18 kills, 4 service aces, and 4.5 blocks from the middle. Zoe Dyck added 9 service aces, 13 kills and was the best passer on the floor, to help Victoria Duester tally 82 assists on the weekend. Great weekend for the girls, but back to work as the Jr. Bisons tournament is coming up this weekend at the U of M. Come on out Saturday or Sunday this weekend and check out some of the action!
