Over the past 2 weekends, Manitoba has been the site of some excellent volleyball played during the 2015 version of the Manitoba Provincial Championships. Over April 25-26 @ Maples Collegiate, the SHOCK 14's rolled through most of their competition on Saturday, playing some of the best volleyball that they had played all year long. SHOCK coaches were thrilled with the bounce back effort from the weekend before and were pumped to get into playoffs time. SHOCK faced off against Winman Smash in the semi-final, setting up an excellent match. Winman took the first set, while SHOCK came back with a close win in the 2nd set. Winman went up 8-2 and 13-7 in the 3rd set, only to have SHOCK climb all the way back to take the lead 14-13. In the end Winman was able to pull off the win and defeat SHOCK, sending them to the Bronze Medal game. The girls were disappointed to not play for the Gold this year, but were determined to come home with some hardware, and handed Dynamo Red a loss in the Bronze medal game to take home 3rd place. The girls will train hard over the next 2 weeks before travelling to Nationals in Calgary from may 14-16.
The SHOCK 18's faced off against the rest of the 18u competition this past weekend at Red River College and were determined to collect the teams 6th straight Provincial title. Day 1 saw some stellar play from the girls, easily defeating their opponents in straight sets. Day 2 saw the girls playing on the Championship court all day, and rolling through their opponents with ease, until facing off against Fury in the semi final. SHOCK took the first set quite handily, but faced an opponent in the 2nd set that was not ready to go home just yet. Fury won the second set by a score of 25-16, and SHOCK was off to a 3rd set. An uneasy feeling in the gym for SHOCK supporters was quelled quickly as the girls jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 3 set victory to face off against the Cobras in the final. With the rest of the tournament all wrapped up, all eyes were on Court 4 of the South Gym, ready for the tilt that was up next. In true Cobras/SHOCK fashion, the first two sets were split with some excellent serving and passing, and some timely kills and blocks to keep the crowd on their toes. The 3rd set came down to a little bit of passing and serving, and some nerves as this would be the last match these teams ever play as a group in Manitoba. Going down 14-12, the SHOCK girls stayed composed, and stuck to the game plan, never worrying in the face of defeat, and came back to win the next 4 points on a couple of blocks and Cobra hitting errors. After a 16-14 finish, the 2015 18u Provincial title belonged to SHOCK once again.
The crowd was certainly treated to some excellent volleyball over the course of both weekends, and as the future looks bright for the SHOCK 14's, the SHOCK 18's are looking to close up a storied club volleyball career with another National title as both teams travel to Calgary next week to compete at the Volleyball Canada National Championships. Best of luck to both teams!
